The Bab el-Mandeb Threat

The Bab el-Mandeb Threat

Houthi Coastal Control and the Emerging Maritime Denial Environment

The September 2026 Houthi advance along Yemen’s western coast and onto islands adjacent to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has improved the group’s operational position around one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.

This Analysis assesses how closer coastal and island positions may strengthen Houthi maritime surveillance, targeting and strike capabilities without necessarily providing control of the strait.

The report examines the distinction between sea control and sea denial, the Houthi maritime kill chain, the operational value of missiles, UAVs, USVs and small craft, the sustainability of Western naval countermeasures and the indicators that could signal further escalation.

The assessment concludes that the principal threat is not permanent closure of Bab el-Mandeb, but persistent selective maritime denial capable of increasing the cost and risk of navigation and forcing sustained naval commitment.
