Human Rights Watch reported that Malian forces and Russia’s Africa Corps carried out drone strikes that killed civilians during intensified operations against armed groups. Citing ACLED data, HRW recorded 47 drone strikes and 94 civilian deaths between April and August 2026, compared with 22 strikes and 44 deaths in the same period a year earlier. The organisation documented attacks affecting a cattle market and a health centre; it also reported abuses by insurgent groups.
The reported rise in strikes and civilian deaths points to heightened protection risks as Mali’s security campaign expands. The figures and incident accounts are attributed to HRW and ACLED and have not been independently adjudicated; the government and Russian representatives had not publicly responded to the allegations in the reporting reviewed.
