Romanian F-16s shot down two jet-powered drones over the country’s territorial waters in the Black Sea on 17 October, Romania’s Defence Ministry said. Defence Minister Radu Miruță assessed that the aircraft may have been Russian-made Geran-family models. NATO said it remained ready to respond, while Bucharest announced that a North Atlantic Council meeting on Black Sea security was scheduled for 20 October.
The interception marks a significant step in Romania’s response to repeated drone incidents near its coast and underscores the risk of further spillover from the war in Ukraine. The drones’ origin has not been independently established; continued air policing and clear communication will be important to reduce the risk of miscalculation around NATO territory and commercial shipping.
