Operational relevance of VHF surveillance-radar attrition in Russia’s air-defence network

A Ukrainian strike targeted a Russian P-18 Terek VHF surveillance radar near Semenivske in occupied Donetsk Oblast. The available evidence confirms the strike but does not independently establish the scale of physical damage.

The Analysis examines the radar’s role in Russian early warning and air-defence cueing, the potential operational effects of its temporary or permanent loss, and the importance of network redundancy, replacement capacity and possible follow-on strikes against other radar, C2 or SAM nodes.

The assessment concludes that a single P-18 loss is unlikely to create a durable air-defence gap by itself, but repeated attacks against interconnected surveillance and command nodes could progressively degrade local situational awareness and track continuity.
