US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Israel should do more to curb settler violence in the West Bank. On 17 October, masked settlers attacked European diplomats, a French mayor and Palestinian civilians near Taybeh, according to witnesses and European officials; Israel’s military condemned the attack and said the visit had not been coordinated in advance. US diplomats visited Taybeh on 18 October. The incidents add to reports of attacks on Palestinian communities during the olive harvest.
The violence has broadened the issue from protection of local communities to the safety of foreign diplomatic representatives, increasing the potential for international pressure. Israeli investigations and any enforcement action will be key indicators; the visit and public statements do not establish that new US measures have been adopted.
