Operational implications for the southern Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb maritime corridor
Ansar Allah’s reported seizure of Greater and Lesser Hanish extends its presence into the southern Red Sea island chain. The occupation strengthens its position around the approaches to Bab el-Mandeb, but control of the islands does not by itself establish control of maritime traffic.
This Analysis examines how the islands could support surveillance, target cueing and dispersed operations. Their operational value depends on sensors, secure communications, logistics, force protection and integration with other coastal and island positions. At the document’s information cut-off of 15 September 2026, a functioning island-based ISR-to-strike network had not been publicly established.
