North Korea has announced the test firing of an upgraded 240 mm guided multiple rocket launcher system intended to strengthen firepower deployed toward the southern part of the Korean Peninsula.
According to North Korean state media, the upgraded ammunition incorporates extended range and autonomous precision guidance. These performance claims have not been independently verified.
The programme is operationally relevant because it indicates continued development of North Korean artillery from conventional area-saturation systems toward longer-range and more accurate guided fires capable of threatening targets in South Korea.
