The S-350 Vityaz is a Russian medium-range surface-to-air missile system designed to provide layered defence against aircraft, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and selected ballistic threats. Its architecture combines a mobile command post, multifunction radar and launchers carrying twelve ready-to-fire missiles.

System Architecture

The 50K6A command post coordinates target data and engagement assignments. The 50N6A multifunction radar provides surveillance, tracking and missile guidance, while each 50P6A launcher carries twelve ready-to-fire missiles. The distributed architecture allows sensors and launchers to operate from separate positions and to integrate into a wider layered air-defence network.

Operational Assessment

The S-350’s principal advantage is its combination of engagement capacity and ready-missile availability against complex or saturation attacks. Compared with legacy S-300PS formations, it offers a denser magazine and a more modern automated command-and-control architecture. Its actual effectiveness nevertheless depends on radar coverage, communications, crew readiness, reload availability and protection against stand-off weapons, electronic warfare and suppression of enemy air defences.
