The United States is moving to commit the remaining funds from a $400 million Ukraine assistance package, but the equipment covered does not include Patriot air-defence interceptors.
Initial deliveries include offensive weapons and equipment as well as spare parts for armoured vehicles. The absence of additional Patriot interceptors is operationally significant as Ukraine continues to face sustained Russian missile and long-range UAV attacks.
The composition of the package therefore has direct implications for the sustainability of Ukraine’s high-end air and missile defence rather than simply for the overall monetary value of US assistance.
